2009 AAPC Conference Issue

This month, Winning Campaigns is honored to publish the work of Dr. Joan Van Tassel and her analysis of the Obama campaign victory, in conjunction with her investigation into the “who, what, where, when, and why.” of this historic event. As consultants, candidates, and political pundants, we have so much to learn from this "campaign of campaigns." Winning Campaigns is pleased to provide you with this look into this historic event, so that you might learn from it.

When speaking with Dr. Tassel, David All, founder of a conservative Web agency, the David All Group said , “Obama never hit home runs,” and continued, “They didn’t walk out to home plate and swing for the fences every day. They did it by hitting singles and doubles. That is an abstract analogy but it is the simple truth: the Obama campaign put people in place who understood the Internet, making the online operation an early budget priority and not holding money for a media spending buy - using the Internet as a communicative channel. They built communities within communities, empowering others to take up the cause. It’s powerful.”

Vijay Ravindran of Catalist, which developed a likely voter model for the Obama staff, states the basics clearly: “Political campaigns require a very practical, focused approach. Practitioners are working in campaign time. They need information quickly. The key to winning is to make outreach programs more efficient by talking to more people and leaving out the people you shouldn’t talk to. And when you do talk, you talk about the right issues in the right way.”
